It fuels our innovation and connects us closer to the community we serve.Job DescriptionJoin a great team at the City of Merritt!As a Utilities Maintenance Operator II, you will work as part of a cooperative team, and through the use of manual labour and powered equipment and tools, the Utilities Maintenance Operator II will construct and/or install, inspect, maintain, clean and repair various components of the City’s water distribution, wastewater collection and storm water conveyance systems.TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain the water distribution system, wastewater collection system in good working order.
  • Carries out daily operations in accordance with provincial legislation.
  • Collects samples and completes lab testing and sampling, interpreting lab results to identify inefficiencies in the operation, and correct as necessary.
  • Handles water and wastewater treatment chemicals safely.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshoots, inspects, and services equipment with corrective action when required.
  • Focus on safety practices and policies while undertaking associated day to day tasks.
  • Ensures maintenance and plant records are accurate and up to date.
  • Works with City staff and identifies/contributes to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Compiles data and prepares electronic reports on plant operation, ensuring minimum plant process requirements are met.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Must participate on on-call rotation

QualificationsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation Requirements:

  • Grade 12 or equivalency

Occupational Certificates, Licenses, Association Memberships:

  • Operators must possess both an EOCP Water Distribution System Operator Level II certification and a Wastewater Collection System Level II certification
  • Valid BC Class 3 Drivers License with Air Endorsement

Experience:

  • 5 years experience safely and effectively working in a municipal utilities environment, including hands on experience of installation, maintenance and repair of water main, valves, hydrants, meters, sewer main, storm mains, lift stations, pumps, manholes, and other related distribution / collection / conveyance systems components.
  • Competent experience in the safe operation of heavy equipment (Combination Sewer Cleaner/Hydro-Vac truck, Front End Loader, Dump Truck, etc).
  • Some demonstrated experience leading crews to complete projects and tasks in municipal utilities environment.

  • Sound knowledge of methods, tools, equipment and procedures related to water distribution systems including standard methods for bacteriological sampling and testing, cross-connection control and disinfection
  • Some knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic principles
  • Basic office computer skills
  • Ability to interpret and apply City bylaws, policies, procedures, system diagrams and mapping, and construction standards and specifications
  • Ability to create and maintain manual and/or computerized records, and report/interpret data information
  • Ability to frequently perform heavy manual labour over long periods of time and frequently work in potentially hazardous working conditions such as heavy traffic areas, trenches, chambers, and other confined spaces

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRING

  • First Aid Emergency Level – Industry and CPR Level A Certification; Traffic Control training; WHMIS Certification; Equipment Operator’s training, Confined Spaces Training, Asbestos Handling, Forklift training, and other job-related safety training
  • BC Water and Waste Association (BCWWA) Membership is an asset

The Utilities Maintenance Operator II position requires 40 hours per week.Additional InformationThis position is within the CUPE local bargaining unit with a wage of $35.82 per hour (2024 rate).
