Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic applicationUnder the direction of the Team Lead, Field Surveys or Land Surveyor, the Survey Technician takes a lead role in the safety and work of a field survey team and is responsible for the collection and layout of positional information required for various types of legal, engineering and construction survey projects in support of HRM’s capital infrastructure and property boundary requirements.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with a Junior Survey Technician to complete the work of a field survey team while collecting and laying out positional information.
- Operates and maintains survey vehicle to ensure safe and dependable trips to the work site.
- Collects, copies and compiles survey related information from various sources, in preparation for surveying projects.
- Consults with various internal staff to clarify scope of work required.
- Maintains, sets up and operates various types of surveying equipment as required.
- Takes a lead role in recording field measurements and making field notes and sketches as per HRM standards.
- Is responsible for making technical decisions in the field and ensuring that measurements are taken in the correct location and in the correct quantity, to ensure efficiency.
- Instructs the Junior Survey Technician on the use of surveying equipment and surveying practices, as needed.
- Takes a lead role in the duties of a Temporary Workplace Signer, to ensure public safety, when needed.
- Acts as first contact when communicating with members of the public during surveying projects.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
- Diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology (2 years) from Nova Scotia Community College or other recognized institution.
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience working in an urban surveying and engineering environment, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and an acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
- Certification in WHMIS, emergency first aid, traffic control and temporary workplace signage as per requirements of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act or be willing to obtain.
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of surveying equipment, particularly Leica total stations and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).
- Thorough knowledge of HRM’s specifications and guidelines for the collection and layout of positional information would be an asset.
- Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Leica GEO and other software applications such as, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet Explorer and Nova Scotia Property Online would be an asset.
- Working knowledge of the principles of legal surveying and municipal engineering as they apply to the position.
- Basic knowledge of land subdivision, conveyance, and registration systems in Nova Scotia.
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public while carrying out field surveying projects.
- Working knowledge of the Nova Scotia Coordinate Referencing System.
- General knowledge of HRM’s organizational structure and the specific relationship between Surveying, and Design and Construction.
Physical Demands:
- Field work in mild to extreme year-round weather conditions, regular moderate to extreme noise conditions on or near streets and occasional dust conditions on gravel roads and construction sites.
- Field work involves being on feet most of the day and often traversing over uneven and rough terrain.
- Field work involves lifting and carrying, sometimes for long distances, various survey equipment. Up to 30 pounds.
