Job description: In conjunction with the School Bus Driver, this position is responsible for greeting students, helping students to find assigned seats, making sure safety devices are secured, providing extra care to students with special needs, monitoring student behavior, and reinforcing rules and regulations.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Job assignments may include regular or special education routing. Some assignments may require “CPR” training, which will be provided.
  • Conducts a pre-trip inspection of all safety equipment.
  • Keeps all emergency exits clear of obstructions.
  • Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority and compiles written reports as requested in accordance with the D15 Transportation Employee Handbook and the D15 Student Handbook.
  • Participates in an annual bus evacuation drill as required by the State of Illinois and implements evacuations as required in an emergency to include safely exiting from the rear of the school bus.
  • In an event where the Bus Driver becomes incapacitated, reports immediately, via two-way radio to dispatch/transportation office, requesting police or ambulance service as needed.
  • Supervises students at any time including regular routes, sporting events, field trips, etc.
  • Assists Bus Driver in boarding, seating and/or securement of students. Secures and installs wheelchairs, car seats, and other safety devices on the bus as needed.
  • Remains on a school bus at all times while children are on board, unless there is another adult supervisor present on the bus. Exception to this is when operating a wheelchair lift; any other times with permission from dispatch/transportation office by radio.
  • Exercises responsible leadership and appropriate behavior when on duty.
  • Provides needed support when dealing with medically fragile students.
  • Provides needed support when dealing with discipline issues.
  • Maintains student discipline on the bus and enforces rules governing student conduct, including through oral communication when the bus is in motion.
  • Abides by all District policies and rules as outlined in the District Transportation Employee Handbook and School Board Policies.
  • Communicates effectively and positively with parents, students, staff and co-workers.
  • Models non discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Keeps assigned time schedules, which may require working during pre-day light and dusk periods, and makes every effort to be on time while ensuring safety.

Expected salary: $17.56 per hour
