It fuels our innovation and connects us closer to the community we serve.Job DescriptionThe Public Works Clerk Typist (1-Year Term) is on the front line as the key point of contact between the public and the City to provide customer service and find creative ways to solve challenges. As a Public Works Clerk Typist, you will work with customers to answer inquiries, guide residents through processes, help complete forms, and provide information. You will be focused on details with strong organizational and typing skills, and take the time to listen to effectively deliver what is most helpful for the customer and for your team.The Public Works Clerk Typist (1-Year Term) also provides administrative and clerical support for the City of Merritt’s team and other internal stakeholders by keeping records and files, entering and retrieving data to/from computerized information systems, and ensuring all records are accurate and complete. The incumbent will be responsible for ordering and organizing stationery and supplies in the office and ensuring office equipment is in working order.This position involves responding to and resolving high volumes of internal and external customer service requests and complaints and demands confidential discretion.This is a 40-hour work week position.Qualifications
- At least 2+ years of experience in a customer service role.
- Grade 12 completion plus 1 year in a post secondary program in office administration/business administration or related discipline.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license.
- Minimum typing speed of 50 wpm.
- Considerable experience or training in standard computer applications including word processing, excel spreadsheets, and databases.
- Able to provide professional, patient, attentive, and courteous service to internal and external customers and team members.
- Courteous and effective with the public in providing information and assisting with customer service requests.
- Handle sensitive, private, and confidential information with tact and discretion.
- Work independently and collaborate with the greater team.
- Problem solving skills with a talent for finding creative and resourceful solutions.
- Experience in dealing with diverse communities.
- Time management skills with effective methods to remain organized, prioritize, and multi-task.
- Proficient computer and keyboarding skills; working knowledge of MS Excel and Word is preferred.
- Excellent numeracy skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communications skills.
- Excellent team-building skills with an ability to collaborate with management.
For new hires and those working in designated positions of trust, employment is conditional on a satisfactory police information check clearance.Additional InformationThis is a 1-year term position within the CUPE local bargaining unit with a wage of $29.93 per hour (2024 rate).
