What you’ll doThe Theatre Department at CapU is a dynamic, integrated department with three separate programs: Acting for Stage & Screen, Musical Theatre and Technical Theatre. Every year, we produce four full-scale productions on the BlueShore Centre for the Performing Arts in which students from each program perform and work as crew. We are closely connected with the Motion Picture Arts Program, where our students collaborate on films and shorts. Most instructors teach in more than one program, and we collaborate regularly to support one another’s work.Capilano University’s Theatre Department is seeking a private voice instructor for the Acting for the Stage and Screen Program. This applicant will be an expert in: voice production for speech and text, vocal health, voice work for actors, and have a working knowledge of the current industry standards. Knowledge of singing various styles and working with text in song is an asset.These positions are comprised of one-on-one voice instruction sessions where voice production and technique, vocal health, vocal and functional anatomy, breath control and support are taught to multiple levels of performance students in our programs for spoken voice. Some sung voice may also be part of the support the instructor provides. These lessons also support the season of show performances in the BlueShore Centre for the Arts. Instructors can attend or assist at rehearsals if the students require vocal production help.We support a variety of techniques; Current faculty members have a master-teacher level knowledge of many functional voice pedagogies for both the sung and spoken voice. A working knowledge of spoken voice, and acting techniques is essential, as the position also supports Studio Theatre and in-class performances. Working knowledge of singing is an asset.Written reflections and personal growth/observations are expected as part of the assignments for the students and feedback from the instructors.
Lessons are approximately 50 minutes per week.
What you’ll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree, certification or equivalent qualification from an accredited college or training program. Professional experience will be considered. A Masters in a relevant area is preferred.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience or private vocal teaching experience. Must have excellent communication skills, demonstrate patience and leadership skills, be energetic, driven, creative, and dependable.
  • Advanced knowledge of spoken-voice texts, monologues, sonnets, scenes, etc.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Knowledge of vocal technique for both the sung and spoken voice, functional vocal pedagogy, and music fundamentals are required
  • Piano skills are an asset.
  • Knowledge of dialects is an asset.
