Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.Seattle City Light is seeking a Power Structures Mechanic in the Transmission & Distribution/Engineering Operations’ Civil Construction Division. The Power Structures Mechanic is expected to operate heavy construction equipment to construct, repair, and install utility equipment, underground transformer vaults, manholes, duct runs, streetlight poles and maintain transmission right-of-ways. This position will report to the Civil Construction Crew Supervisor.Job ResponsibilitiesOperate heavy construction equipment to construct, repair and install utility equipment, underground transformer vaults, manholes, duct runs, streetlight poles and maintain transmission right-of-ways. Equipment operated includes:

  • Tractor
  • Loader
  • Backhoe
  • Hydrocranes
  • Boom trucks
  • Track-mounted excavators
  • Other equipment in support of underground or hydroelectric utility construction

Here is more about what you’ll be doing:

  • Read and interpret blueprints and perform miscellaneous job-related tasks.
  • Act as lead worker in the absence of a crew chief to direct and control the activities of truck drivers, utility construction lead workers, maintenance, utility and general laborers in the construction and maintenance of underground utilities or hydroelectric installations.
  • Climb ladders and work in deep excavations, confined spaces, or tunnels.
  • Lift and carry heavy timbers, brick, mortar, and other building materials in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Safely operate small tools, power equipment and 20-pound chipping guns horizontally for extended periods.
  • Conduct hazardous waste containment cleanup and required to be on-call to respond to emergencies.
  • Work in or around potentially hazardous construction sites, excavations, materials, or energized lines/cables and in all types of weather conditions.
  • Load and transport equipment, gravel, rock, or dirt to and from job sites.
  • When required, use a loader to clear brush and trees to maintain transmission rights-of-way and a snowplow to remove snow. Grease and check fluids of assigned vehicles and equipment daily.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:Requires two years experience in constructing, repairing and maintaining underground distribution systems, operating some related equipment and developing a familiarity with the use of heavy motorized construction equipment (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background).Work Environment/Physical Demands
May be required to be on call 24 hours/day to respond to emergencies. Requires working in or around potentially hazardous construction sites, excavations, materials or energized lines/cables. Required to stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time. Requires sustained physical exertion and the lifting of heavy materials/objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds. May require handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances. Work is typically performed in all types of weather conditions.License, Certification and Other Requirements

  • Current Washington State drivers combination license (A “Full” Abstract of Driving Record (obtained at applicant’s expense) from the State of Washington Department of Licensing is required to move forward in this hiring process).
  • May require Washington State certification for asbestos work.
  • May also require appropriate crane certification as required by law.

Desired Qualifications – You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • This work requires knowledge of the practices and procedures of excavation, utility and road construction, and utility equipment and safety regulations and application of underground construction standards and WISHA and OSHA safety regulations, including the installation of underground access holes, handholes, conduit pipe or direct buried utilities.
  • The ability to lead and mentor, have a good attitude and team building skill set.
