For more information, visit .Role ResponsibilitiesThe Government of Alberta, Technical Standards Branch within Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors is currently looking for an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer to join their busy office in Edmonton.If you are looking for a challenging and exciting opportunity, look no further and apply!Reporting to the Director of Highway Operations, and supporting the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Specialist, the ITS Engineer position provides engineering and administrative support for planning, development, procurement, administration and delivery of various ITS infrastructure and systems supporting highway operations and maintenance, as well as traveller information and traffic management.This position provides support for Intelligent Transportation Systems operations and maintenance to internal stakeholders, and assists with the establishment of Department standards, specifications, design drawings, and practice guidelines for ITS. This position supports the operations of the Provincial Transportation Management Centre (TMC).The range of responsibilities in this position may include:
Coordination and Support for ITS Operations and Program Implementation:
- Provides comprehensive support to senior staff managing ITS for the Department, including technical engineering and administrative tasks related to various programs and projects.
- Coordinates ITS projects and programs affecting traffic operations, incident management, emergency response, and highway maintenance.
- Assists in managing consultants and contractors, coordinating agreements with stakeholders, establishing work scopes, preparing terms of reference, and acting as the ITS project manager during the tender process. Responsibilities include reviewing work and invoices, monitoring progress and budgets, negotiating with co-funding partners, and coordinating project steering committees and stakeholders.
- Helps deliver training programs and workshops for staff and external partners using implemented ITS technologies (listed below).
- Conducts site visits for field installations, inspections, and audits.
Technical Support on ITS Technologies:
- Provides engineering support for winter-related ITS technologies such as Road Weather Information System (RWIS), Mobile Road Weather Information System (MARWIS) , Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS), Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), traffic monitoring cameras, and Automatic Vehicle Location System (AVLS).
- Conducts technical reviews of documentation and reports related to ongoing and new ITS infrastructure projects.
ITS Specification and Document Development:
- Aids in the development and maintenance of ITS documentation, tools, and systems for various projects.
- Offers engineering support and administration for planning tasks and projects related to current and future ITS initiatives.

- University graduation in Electrical or Civil Engineering.
- Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) registered member with Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or other Association within Canada.
- Eligible for membership with the APEGA.
- Five (5) years related experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems or traffic engineering.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets:
- Technical knowledge in Systems or traffic engineering (ITS) technologies and traffic engineering standards and practices.
- Project coordination experience is required, preferably in complex highway operation and ITS-related projects.
- Working knowledge of highway design, construction and maintenance principles, specifications, standards and practices; good knowledge of the Department’s Geometric Design Guide, Lighting Design Guide, and Roadside Design Guide.
- Experience in preparing Request for Proposal RFP terms of reference and administering consulting agreements and contracts.
- Knowledge and experience of specialized ITS technologies such as closed-circuit television (CCTV), traffic cameras, Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS), Automated Vehicle Location Systems (AVLS), Weigh-in-Motion (WIM), computer control systems, and advanced traffic management systems.
- Some knowledge of telecommunications systems and their capabilities.
- Understanding of the Alberta Public Service’s vision, values, and competencies.
Skills:
- Strong analytical, problem solving, organizational and time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to coordinate the work of consultants and contractors.
- Excellent written communication skills (i.e. technical writing, engineering reports, specifications).

- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office suite of software.
