  • Obtain supplies needed during surgery such as blood, drugs, solutions, instruments, and additional sterile supplies; prepares specimens for laboratory.
  • Select appropriate methods for sterilizing, balancing time constraints with possible detrimental effects of quicker methods.
  • Clean operating room after surgery, removes and disposes of soiled and/or contaminated materials; changes linen; washes, disassembles, sterilizes, and reassembles instruments.
  • Select, assemble, and organize required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedure in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference cards and/or conferring with physicians or charge nurse.
  • Transport patients from hospital units to the operating room assuring patient’s rights, privacy, safety and well-being.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver’s license.
  • This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).OREducation: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position.ORCombination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
