Each year we assist thousands of researchers and general-interest visitors, both onsite and online, in finding out more about themselves, their families, their communities and their province.About Our OpportunityUnder the general supervision of the Senior Archivist, Preservation Services you will carry out the technical work involved in archival source digitization of materials in a variety of formats; and microfilming, including assessment and repair of filmed holdings. Digitization and reproduction services including scanning, audio and video transfer, and microfilming in accordance with national and international standards using state of the art equipment.You’ll duplicate sound and moving image recordings for preservation and access; create digital records of original archival materials in a variety of formats and conditions for in-house use and public access; and rehouse archival material using archival quality supplies. You’ll retrieve and re-shelve archival holdings; complete minor preservation work; systematically record micro-climate temperature and relative humidity in archival storage areas, as part of preservation management data collection; and complete basic level archival file listing, indexing, meta data capture and data entry.About YouTo be successful in this role, you will have to complete Grade 12 and have 3 years related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Formal training in digitization, image processing and/or micrographics operations would be considered an asset.You require experience in the care and handling of archival quality holdings; knowledge of archival digitization and reprographic techniques; the demonstratable ability to effectively use a wide variety of sophisticated analogue and digital equipment and software, to create high quality images or sound files for long term preservation and public access, and a knowledge of micrographics equipment.You’ll have a excellent understanding of archival care and handling standards and best practices; knowledge of what differentiates archival quality and preservation digitization from commercial digitization and the various elements and steps in quality control; and a high degree of knowledge of metadata capture, indexing and data entry in an archival context.You’ll possess strong organizational skills and computer skills to effectively document workflow, a good ability to work with others, and the ability to lift 17kg (35lb) boxes and use stair-ladders when retrieving and re-shelving archival material.EquivalencyApplicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.BenefitsBased on the employment status and union agreement, the Government of Nova Scotia offers its employees a wide range of benefits such as a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.
