Job description: Come join our team as a Crew Leader and do your part in taking care of Edmonton’s River Valley! In this role, you will provide field level supervision and hands-on leadership, supporting and maintaining some of the River Valley’s most iconic attractions such as Yorath House, 100 St Funicular, and Northeast Park Event Centre.What will you do?

  • Create quality experiences by providing clean and welcoming environments for visitors to enjoy. Use exceptional customer service skills to respond to and resolve citizen concerns in the River Valley
  • Supervise Labourer staff, including hiring, implementing work plans, scheduling, providing orientation, training, performance evaluations, coaching and mentoring. This will include both field level supervision and participation in field work as required
  • Develop and execute effective daily work plans in communication with the Team Leader with a focus on service delivery for, events, bookings and amenity requirements
  • Review booking reports for picnic sites and facilities and assign related tasks to staff
  • Plan and coordinate the production of outdoor ice surfaces, cross-country ski trails, and toboggan hills and ensure ongoing inspections and maintenance through the winter season
  • Update online notifications on the City of Edmonton website regarding conditions for various amenities in the River Valley
  • Ensure work is done following the current policies, procedures, and within safety standards
  • Provide leadership in occupational health and safety by delivering toolbox talks, reviewing and addressing safety related issues or concerns, completing inspections, and reviewing/updating standard operating procedures
  • Assess training needs and ensure all staff training and certifications are current
  • Liaise with various City sections, branches and departments related to site activities and concerns. Build and maintain effective relationships with River Valley partners and stakeholders
  • Conduct site inspections in River Valley parks and facilities. Coordinate any necessary corrective action by staff or other departments
  • Complete administrative tasks including reports, logs, record keeping, purchasing and inventory management. Provide input to unit planning, including budget and work plans
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of a two year diploma in Parks, Recreation, Environment, Turf, Horticulture or a related field
  • A minimum of three years experience in River Valley Parks, park operations and/or maintenance

Assets:

  • Experience with cross country ski trail and ice rink maintenance, or funicular operations
  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license
  • Trailer Training
  • Tool Cat, Front end Loader or Skid Steer training
  • Leadership training courses

  • Excellent supervisory skills and ability, which includes leading, performance management, and assigning work to staff
  • Ability to build high performing teams and foster a positive workplace culture
  • Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in River Valley Parks and Facilities summer and winter operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, prioritization, time management, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently
  • Exemplary customer service skills including demonstrated ability to communicate and deal effectively with the public, internal and external partners in a politically sensitive environment
  • Knowledge of environmental and safety practices and procedures

Conditions of Employment:

  • Physically able to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position, including manual labour and the use of simple hand/or power tools and light motor vehicles for long periods of time in various weather and environmental conditions
  • Intermediate First Aid is a requirement and can be completed upon hire
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, provincial equivalent, or higher (full Class 5 required no GDL). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
