Job description: Job Overview: A loving and dynamic family in Chelsea, QC is seeking a highly creative, adaptable, and proactive full-time governess to provide well-rounded educational and child-minding support for two children ages 2 and 4. The ideal candidate is fluent in FRENCH, RUSSIAN or MANDARIN, passionate about hands-on learning, and IDEALLY has a strong interest in math, science, and engineering, or a willingness to explore these subjects. The governess will design and implement an engaging, play-based curriculum that incorporates the principles of Waldorf or Montessori education, supporting both structured and child-led exploration. At this stage the family does not intend to send children to school and will be homeschooling. This is a full-time, live-out job requiring travel and flexibility with hours. The ideal candidate will view this role as a long-term commitment and an opportunity to grow with the family.RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Devote all their time, attention and ability, to the good care of both children throughout the day including everything related to clothes, diapers, playtime, outings, drop off and pickup from school (as necessary), meals and snacks, naps, tidying up as related to the children, bedtime, and baths (as required).
- Design and implement a developmentally appropriate, hands-on curriculum tailored to the family’s educational values, with a focus on creativity, exploration, and critical thinking.
- Plan and conduct lessons that blend academic subjects with engaging, playful activities.
- Facilitate a natural, comfortable language environment for bilingual learning (Mandarin, Russian or French). Engage with children only in Mandarin, Russian or French, and encourage responses in these languages. Teach basic English, Mandarin/Russian/French reading and writing.
- Thoughtfully integrate arts and crafts projects into learning and play.
- Integrate arts, crafts, and nature-based learning into everyday activities to stimulate creativity and curiosity. Spend as much time outside as possible.
- Take the initiative to adapt to the needs of the children and provide individualized support as they grow.
- Travel with the family as needed, incorporating cultural and learning opportunities from diverse environments into lessons.
- Collaborate with parents to create a flexible, adaptable schedule that aligns with the children’s interests and developmental stages.
- Foster a nurturing, positive environment where children feel confident to explore and learn.
Qualifications:
- Fluent in Mandarin, Russian or French, with strong communication skills in English.
- Background in Waldorf or Montessori education is desirable.
- Experience with young children, ages 2 and up, and a passion for making learning fun.
- Strong interest or willingness to engage in math, science, and engineering topics.
- Outdoor enthusiast, comfortable with incorporating nature and active play into learning and spending a lot of time outside.
- Highly organized, takes initiative, and is proactive.
- Creative and hands-on, with skills in arts, crafts, and other enriching activities.
- Flexible, adaptable, easygoing, and willing to grow alongside the family and children.
- Strong communication skills to honestly work together with the parents to foster a team approach to childcare and education.
