Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.Job DescriptionWe have an opening for an Optical Process Engineer Academic Graduate Appointee. You will work under the guidance of staff members to execute experiments and activities in the areas of micro/nano-fabrication processes, photonics, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), semiconductors, microfluidic devices, chemical/biological devices, and electronic devices for projects that support LLNL programs. This position is in the RF Photonics Group within the Materials Engineering Division (MED) and the Engineering Directorate.You will
- Work under general guidance of staff fabrication process, optical and/or electrical engineers, in areas such as microfabrication, analysis, characterization, experimental development, experimental execution, data collection, interpretation, and reporting, to develop and optimize processes for fabrication of photonic integrated circuits.
- Conduct, analyze, and present data from experiments to develop and improve the understanding of photonic integrated circuits.
- Support fabrication and characterization of devices for custom engineering projects.
- Determine solutions to technical problems involving the processing and utilization of materials by using standard techniques and methodologies.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Optical, Electrical, Nanofabrication, or general Engineering or related field.
- Experience in general Engineering or related field demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
- Experience in Class 100 cleanroom fabricating and characterizing samples to evaluate process performance.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a multidisciplinary team environment, document analyses and prepare, present and explain technical information and publications.
- Strong initiative, interpersonal skills, and creativity.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous LLNL internship experience relating to Optical, Electrical, Nanofabrication, or Engineering.
- Experience with multiple different fabrication stacks each including thin-film deposition or sputtering, resist spinning, lithography, and etching.
- Experience writing Standard Operating Procedures.
- Experience with laser and optical diagnostics, designing experimental setups, performing experiments, and analyzing results using self-written code (e.g. in MATLAB).
